Having a separate paint/crafts sink from the dye area with a plaster/paint trap prevents cross contamination of dye drift, plaster, paint, and other materials between the craft processes. The trap helps prevent drain clogs in a sink that gets heavy use in the casting and molding / paint processes of a prop shop.

For those shops with a crafts area separate from other work areas, the floor should be fitted with a floor drain to allow for excess water to be easily removed. This is especially helpful if work such as stripping and furniture cleaning are part of the work completed in this area as washing down the bare wood with water is a necessary part of the procedure in removing many paint or varnish finishes. Having an area allowing excess water to be contained will be handy for many prop processes including painting, general cleaning, specialty dye processes needing “drip” time, flame-proofing of fabrics or upholstered pieces, etc.

Self-contained eye wash stations are also available for installation in renovated spaces lacking access to plumbing.
